Ameda Purely Yours Double Electric Breast Pump Review

The Ameda Purely Yours was my first breast pump and it served me well. It has many of the benefits of the Spectra S1 (although not all). It is smaller and lighter than many other double electric pumps, which is a bonus for portability. I originally purchased this pump because of its reputation as a reliable closed system, and it did not disappoint. This Ameda Purely Yours review will go through everything I love (and what I don’t love) about this pump.

The price tag on the Ameda is also a lot more wallet friendly than some other pumps AND it comes with a basic tote, 4 extra milk storage bottles (for a total of 6) and a cooler bag. The whole system is small enough that you can easily carry it back and forth to work and it could possibly fit it in your existing purse/bag.

The Purely Yours pump is available with several different accessory options. Below I’ve outlined the basics of the breast pump that are always included followed by the different accessories that are available.  A tote bag is always included, but the type varies, and sometimes a cooler bag with ice packs is available as well.  Do note the pump can also run on 6 AA batteries – these are not included and will need to be purchased separately.

Ameda Purely Yours Review:

Ameda Purely Yours Double Electric Breast Pump Pros:

  • Can adjust speed and suction separately – this is really a must for me so I can get the pump to mimic how my baby nurses – for example with long, slow sucks at a relatively high suction (vacuum) strength. Many pumps do not allow you to adjust these two independently, so you can be stuck with suction that is uncomfortable at the speed you want.
  • Closed system – super hygienic and easy to clean. It is not possible for milk to enter the tubing so you can be assured bacteria will not grow in the tubing or pump motor. Also, a closed system it is safe (in hygiene terms) to lend or sell when it is no longer needed.
  • Not too loud – louder than the Spectra but not bad. I did conference calls with the Ameda running in the background and it was fine.
  • Small and portable – much smaller and lighter than the Medela PISA or the Spectra
  • The pump base has little cup holders where you can rest the milk collection bottles – a major plus for me to make them more stable and avoid spilling any precious milk after a pumping session
  • Multiple Power Options – this pump can run on the AC adapter, via a car charger that is sold separately, or with 6 AA batteries.
  • Can easily pump directly into milk storage bags (for easy storage and portability) using their “Store n’ Pour” system. This didn’t seem important to me before I started pumping, but once I was pumping several times a day in the office it was very important. I wanted to be as efficient as possible and also as sure as possible that I wouldn’t spill any milk. Pumping into milk storage bags was a great time saver for me.

Ameda Purely Yours Double Electric Breast Pump Cons:

  • No digital display – a digital display isn’t a necessity, but it is a “nice to have”. With the Ameda dials, it took a bit more time to find my exact setting each day vs. the Spectra where I could just touch a button and immediately see that the pump was set to the suction speed and vacuum strength that I wanted.
  • No letdown function – for me, this was not a big problem because I could manually adjust suction speed and strength to stimulate letdown, and then adjust to a higher suction with lower speed once my milk began to flow. The trouble was I usually work while pumping, so I would turn on the pump, focus on an email or something, and then realize 10 minutes later that I was still in letdown mode.

Should you buy the Ameda Purely Yours Double Electric Breast Pump?

I fully recommend this breast pump! Reliable, effective, hygienic, portable – it has all the characteristics of an excellent double electric breast pump with very minimal drawbacks. I loved writing this Ameda Purely Yours review because I think it is a fantastic pump.

There aren’t many parts and they are all easy to clean and sterilize. It is lightweight and easy to transport and can be used on AC or battery power. The option that comes with the tote and cooler bag is still very well priced considering what you get (six milk collection bottles is great!) Check it out!
